“La Crisis de los 50. Ninguna historia es inocente” is one of Toirac's more layered and controversial bodies of work. It deals with sexuality, censorship, Cuban identity, voyeurism, aging masculinity, and the circulation of private images in Cuba. The works are deceptively traditional at first glance: small, technically refined watercolors of ordinary Cuban objects — Havana Club bottles, cigars, Granma newspapers, deodorants, bananas, religious souvenirs, etc. But the key conceptual element is that many of the works have images attached or hidden on the reverse side: amateur erotic photographs that circulated informally in Cuba in the early 2000s.
