This contemporary icon is based on the image of the Shroud of Turin, a linen cloth believed by many Christians to be the burial shroud of Jesus Christ. The shroud has been kept for centuries in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin, Italy, and debate over its authenticity continues.
Here the image was created using myrrh, a substance traditionally used in burial practices. For Catholics, myrrh symbolizes Christ’s suffering and death, foreshadowing His sacrificial Passion and burial.
