Hector Hyppolite Bio

(1894-1948)

Considered the most important painter in the history of Haitian art, Hyppolite transcended the boundaries of traditional “primitive” painting of his era and brought Haitian art to international recognition. Discovered by DeWitt Peters (founder of the Centre d’ Arte in the early 40’s) Hyppolite got his beginning in painting the facades and interiors of local buildings in his hometown of St. Marc. A Houngan, or Voodoo priest like his father and grandfather, his early work has an intense focus on Voodoo iconography; yet later, as he became more known as a painter, he broadened his visual scope and expanded his subject matter to include historical and social issues of Haiti. Hyppolite’s work has been shown internationally and it is included in many museums with a Haitian representation.
